How to submit an application

Candidates are responsible for completing the online application form and submitting it through the system to their undergraduate institution. The institution will then ensure that the application is complete and make a decision whether they wish to endorse the application or not. If the Institution elects to endorse the application, they will add a letter of endorsement on behalf of the candidate and will then submit it through the system to the appropriate regional committee. Candidates are advised to contact their undergraduate institution as soon as possible if they are considering applying for a Marshall Scholarship.

The deadlines for the 2027 Marshall Competition are: 29th of September 2026 for applicants and recommenders at 5:00pm in the time zone of your endorsing instution; 1st October 2026 for endorsement and submission by the US Institution at 5:00pm in the time zone of the endorsing instution.

Your Completed Application

Candidates may apply in one region only – either that in which they have their permanent home address or ordinary place of residence/employment, or that in which they are studying. Any candidate applying in more than one region will automatically be disqualified.

Candidates may apply for either the one year or two year Scholarship not both. Any candidate found applying for both will automatically be disqualified.

Candidates must submit their application on the online form provided. Applications must be endorsed by the President, Provost, or Academic Dean of the applicant’s US undergraduate institution. The online application must be submitted and authorised by a designated member of staff at the applicant’s educational institution. Please note permission must be sought to be endorsed by your graduate institution.

No endorsing institution may submit more than 24 applications overall. There is no cap on the number of applications that can be sent to an individual Region.

NB Your institution may have earlier deadlines for submission of your application. Please ask your institutional advisor for guidance on internal deadlines.

All applicants must complete and submit their applications, including letters of recommendation, no later than 5:00pm in the time zone where your endorsing institution is located on 29th September 2026. The application will then be processed by your endorsing institution for submission. No changes will be able to be made to the application after this date.

Final submission of the application, including the three letters of recommendation and letter of endorsement, must be submitted online by the endorsing institution  no later than 5:00pm in the time zone where your endorsing institution is located on 1st October 2026.

Applications for the 2027 Marshall Scholarship are now open. To be eligible for a 2027 Marshall Scholarship, candidates must: Be citizens of the United States of America (at the time they apply for a scholarship); By the time they take up their scholarship (i.e. September 2027), hold their first undergraduate degree from an accredited four-year college or university in the United States; Have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.7 (on a 4.0 scale) on their undergraduate degree at the time of application – rounded GPAs are not accepted.; Have graduated from their first undergraduate college or university after April 2024; Not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at school in the UK. Marshall Scholarship Pathways A Marshall Scholarship provides funding for one or two years for master’s degree programmes, or up to three years for doctoral study, at any UK university. There are five possible pathways of study: One-year pathway (1) 1 x one-year master’s degree (minimum 10-month programme). Two-year pathways (including Master’s and Doctoral) (2) 2 x one-year master’s degree (at the same or different universities, pursued consecutively) (3) 1 x two-year master’s degree (at one university) (4) PhD/DPhil degree (at one university, typically 3 years in the UK) – For Marshall Scholars who enter as PhD/DPhil candidates, the Commission provides three years of guaranteed funding subject to academic progress. (5) 1 x one-year master’s degree + start PhD/DPhil in Year 2 (at the same or different universities). – In this scenario, the Commission will guarantee two years of funding, and may provide a third year of funding on a discretionary basis. To complete their PhD/DPhil, Marshall, Scholars may need to secure external funding thereafter. Please find an image of a route map showing the scholarship pathways below.
